Cases of malnutrition likely to rise should violence continue – UNHCR

The UNHCR says cases of malnutrition in refugee camps will most likely increase in the coming month if the crisis in South Sudan continues.

The UN Refugee agency says thousands people, including Sudanese refugees living in Maban County of Upper Nile state are in need of food assistance.

UNHCR Senior Relations Officer, Teresa Ongaro told Eye Radio that the agency is concerned about malnutrition among children in the refugee camps.

“If they do not get food,” she said, “then definitely we can expect to see cases of severe malnutrition going up.”

“However, what is required is food to be brought to the refugees now so that we can prevent that situation happening.”

People escaping fighting in Blue Nile and Southern Kordofan have been camping in Doro, Yusif Batil and Jamaam refugee camps in Upper Nile state.
