Angry residents beat ‘drought-maker’ to death

In Amadi State, a man who claimed to be a rainmaker in Kediba village has been killed by a group of residents.

Taban Uyev was beaten to death on Wednesday over the accusation that he used his magic powers to prevent rainfall in the area.

Kediba Payam has had no enough rainfall for the last two months, making it hard for the communities to cultivate their farmland.

The state Minister of Information, Victor Maburuk, told Eye Radio that members of the community killed the man on the way to a police station.

“Some angry people who have lost these crops started beating him on the way before reaching the prison department,” Mr Maburuk said.

A similar incident occurred in Torit County in August 2015. Youths from Hiyala Payam killed a man after accusing him of causing a drought in the area.

Officials said community members believed the slain man to have spiritual powers and blamed him for having contributed to the drought in the county, specifically in Hiyala Payam.
