Amadi gov’t probes starvation cases in Mundri

Author : | Published: Thursday, February 4, 2016

The governor of Amadi state says his government is investigating reports that people are starving to death in Mundri.

Eight people have starved to death in the area since violence broke out in August 2015 after the killing of an executive director.

On Tuesday, the chairman of JMEC, Festus Mogae, said members of the monitoring and verification teams visited the area recently and found people still dying of hunger.

Governor Joseph Ngere told Eye Radio that county commissioners could not confirm the reports of JMEC.

“People in Amadi state and some areas have higher survival mechanisms. Since that time, food was distributed once, but we don’t deny that people are suffering,” Gov Ngere said.

“Maybe JMEC has its source of information from somewhere. We are still investigating that and we will find out exactly where people are starving to death.”

There have also been reports of youth looting vehicles carrying relief food items in the area.
