The African Union is urging the warring parties in South Sudan to honor the two agreements they signed last week in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

The President of Guinea, Alpha Condé, who chairs the AU Peace and Security Council, was speaking in Addis Ababa last night during the meeting of the Council as part of the ordinary summit of heads of state and government.

He urged both parties, the Government and the SPLM-SPLA in the opposition, to respect their agreements on the cessation of hostilities and the question of the detainees.

“In South Sudan, since 15th December 2013, expectations for the world’s youngest country seem to have vanished under the pressure of increasing instability. This has been made worse by a serious breach of trust between the various sides. We urge the warring parties to abide by the agreement signed in Addis Ababa on 23rd January to put an end to widespread killing, to abide by the law and to respect human rights and Constitutional law,” he said.

President Condé said the AU is deeply concerned by the conflict that erupted in South Sudan six weeks ago.

He added the AU Peace and Security Council needs to guarantee peace in the Central African Republic in order to prevent any occurrence of genocide.
