Profile of the Station

Eye Radio is a ‘one stop shop’ where South Sudanese listeners can tune in seven days a week, 24 hours a day and hear local, national and international news and sports, with in-depth focus on a wide range of issues related to the development of South Sudan.Eye Radio broadcasts in English, Simple Arabic and in seven local languages.

Eye Radio began as a project of Education Development Center (EDC), an international NGO based in the US, with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). SRS’s first broadcast was on July 30, 2003, with initial one hour-long shortwave broadcasts, consisting of news summaries and music.

Formerly operating as Sudan Radio Service on shortwave and later on 98.6 SRS FM, Eye Radio is South Sudan’s first independent broadcast provider of news and information. Today, Eye Radio is managed as a partnership between Internews and Eye Media.

Eye Radio went on the air in June 2010 and is now on 24 hours per day from its studios in Korok, Juba. With the name change from SRS in August, 2012, Eye Radio has launched new programming initiatives, including a comprehensive morning and evening programs; “The Dawn” and “Sundown” as current affairs programs.

Eye Radio’s provides its listener with comprehensive news in English & Simple Arabic 5 times a day, and in one local language everyday for 7 days – a week.

Its peace initiative and civic education programs include; “Search for Peace” and “Talk to the People.”

Eye Radio’s popular entertainment shows include; ‘Song Request, Rhumba Sukun Sukun, Top10 and Jam Session.

The station is the only source for live broadcast of important events such as peace talks, sports tornaments anywhere across the world through its latest technological gadgets. Eye Radio is popular for broadcasting Live the CPA in Nairobi, and the negotiations of the Agreement on the Conflict in South Sudan from Addis Ababa.

It emphasizes on national, African and other international news, in addition to locally produced audio features, market reports, traffic, health and safety tips, local proverbs, interviews and call-ins.

Eye Radio has overtime developed a stringer network across the country to provide reports from the states [grass-roots].”

It brodcasts on 98.6 FM in Juba, with transmissions in major towns of Torit, Bor, Yambio, Rumbek, Aweil, Wau and Kuajok. Other repeater stations plus several “translator” or “gap filler” stations have been planned in order to increase Eye Radio’s coverage to South Sudan’s main population centers with a presence in each state.

Eye Radio produces detailed objective news and information, programs with content related to civic education, health, agriculture, and other important issues, as well as music, sports and entertainment.

The radio is fully run by South Sudanese managers and experienced journalists, whose goal is to provide objective news and information.

Eye Radio’s vision is to develop into a self-sustaining independent radio station, serving the whole of the Republic of South Sudan and surrounding territories.

o To provide to the people of South Sudan and neighboring territories objective and balanced news and information on issues vital to an informed and participating citizenry
o To provide and facilitate access to information, including governmental issues and elections, civic education, health, education, culture and gender.
o To provide education and training to build the capacity of journalists and other media professionals
o To promote and encourage training projects within the media industry, with regard to apprentice and operative training
o To participate fully with colleague organizations within the media industry.
