IGAD-Plus urges SC to revise UNMISS mandate
The IGAD plus has called on the UN Security Council to urgently extend the mission of UNMISS with a revised mandate including the deployment of the Regional Protection Force in South Sudan.
On Friday, the regional body said the government of South Sudan agreed to the deployment during its summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The Minister of Information, Michael Makuei, said the parties would negotiate on the size and mandate of the force.
In a communique seen by Eye Radio, the IGAD plus said the government and troop contributing countries will agree on the composition, mandate, armament, deployment, timing and funding for the force.
The summit called on the Government to bear responsibility to facilitate the deployment of the Force to avoid further deterioration of the situation in South Sudan.
It also encouraged the Dr. Riek Machar to rejoin the peace process and welcomed Taban Deng Gai’s willingness to step down if Dr. Machar returns.
